In the USA, as well as in Europe, public utilities are under economic regulation, as a consequence of the liberalization and privatization of public services. Government recognizes the importance of the market and operates through independent bodies to seek free competition within regulated sectors, thus guaranteeing universal service. Financial regulation is unique in itself. Insufficient financial supervision has been one of the causes behind the current economic crisis.
